During the course of the last London marathon, gels made from seaweed extracts were used as a hydration source, containing water inside with the aim of eliminating the use of plastic bottles in the race.

Recently, a water bottling system stored in edible capsules that do not generate waste has been launched. The idea was implemented during the 2019 London Marathon, where the use of plastic bottles was prohibited during the race, marking the first time an athletics event has been organized free of plastic.

In this way, athletes no longer have to worry about throwing plastic bottles on the ground or in a bin, thus contributing to social awareness of preserving our planet.

The containers, edible and 100% biodegradable, are made from a membrane based on seaweed. While the capsules biodegrade completely in just six weeks, plastic bottles take around 450 years, making it clear the benefit this packaging change brings.
