Edible gel capsules to improve environmental impact

During the last London marathon, water contained inside seaweed-based edible gel capsules made from seaweed extracts were used for hydration with the goal to eliminate the use of plastic bottles.

Recently, a system to bottle water inside waste neutral edible capsules has been launched. The idea was implemented during the 2019 London Marathon, which made this race to be recognized as the first time ever organized plastic free athletic event.

With this innovation, athletes no longer have to worry about throwing plastic bottles on the floor or in a bin, which helps in the contribution to the social awareness of preserving our planet.

The containers, edible and 100% biodegradable, are made of a membrane based on seaweed. While these capsules biodegrade in just six weeks, plastic bottles take about 450 years, making the benefits obvious.
