Half a century of innovation

Since the 1950s, we have dedicated our resources to manufacturing and optimizing agar, developing innovative products and new uses that bring value and benefits to society.

A history linked to the sea

Our goal has always been clear: to extract agar derived from species of marine algae and transform it into essential products for a wide range of fields, including microbiology, molecular biology, bioprocessing, and food production. Over the decades, we have come a long way, but our essence remains intact: to research, refine and discover new applications for agar that generate value for our customers and benefits for society.

The beginnings of industrial production

In the 1960s, we opened our production plant in Burgos after confirming that Spain had species of algae suitable for agar production. Production began with agar-agar for food use and, shortly thereafter, expanded to include the manufacture of bacteriological agar. Both were completely innovative products in Spain, marking a milestone in the national development of the sector.

International expansion and new lines

We decided to continue advancing in the field of molecular biology and, between the 1970s and early 1980s, we began producing a derivative of agar: agarose. Later, in the mid-1980s, we expanded our portfolio within the production of peptones from Biotécnica, our subsidiary plant located in Mexico, thus strengthening our international presence and our position in the field of microbiology.

Research and innovation

We have continued to firmly commit to innovation as the cornerstone of our development. We constantly promote new lines based on fermentation, upstream and downstream bioprocesses, and cell culture. This approach allows us to develop advanced solutions, expand our reach, and open ourselves up to new markets, responding quickly to current industry challenges and the needs of a constantly evolving environment.

Raw Materials

Our company is based on algae, and we know that the quality of a product begins at its source. That is why we carefully select different species of algae harvested across five continents. We have our own harvesting organization that supervises both the quality of the raw materials and the harvesting process.

The process of harvesting and processing algae is very complex, but years of experience have given us in-depth knowledge of which algae are best suited to each application, and the methods used to harvest and treat them. Once harvested, they are transported to our plant. Our warehouses can hold a large stock of algae, which guarantees supply to all our customers, even in times of scarcity.

Quality and innovation

Since the 1950s, our goal has been to offer customers the products best suited to their needs and to guarantee the highest level of quality. To this end, we apply a comprehensive control system throughout the production chain, from the harvesting of raw materials, through manufacturing, to technical advice on the proper use of the final product.

ISO 9001 Certificate

For more than twenty years, we have evolved alongside each new version of the ISO 9001 standard, embracing each new requirement. Today, we continue to have a certified management system that is robust and focused on continuous improvement and ensuring maximum customer satisfaction at all times.

HACCP System Certificate

As an integral part of quality, we work on new challenges to prevent food risks, with certification in accordance with the IFS Progress Food standard. This recognition implies the effective implementation of an HACCP system and good production practices.

Certificate of organic production

We make safe and healthy products that meet the expectations of different stakeholders using natural and environmentally friendly ingredients. For this reason, we use organic agar, certified by the Castilla y León Organic Farming Council.

Halal Certificate

Our edible agar is Kosher certified, making it suitable for consumption by the Jewish population. Furthermore, the plant origin of the raw material and the agar extraction process make the product suitable for vegans, vegetarians and halal consumers.
