How do they do it? Artists use <span><span>microorganisms<\/span><\/span> of natural or genetically modified colors as &#8220;paint&#8221; and use bacteriological agar as a &#8220;canvas.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In this edition, 300 works from 34 countries inspired by the theme &#8220;microorganisms are beautiful&#8221; have participated. There are three possible categories: Professional Traditional (participants who created their culture in a formal laboratory setting), Non-Professional Traditional (works from an informal setting), and Open (works that used any medium). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>This has been the medal table for the professional category: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"winner\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"cf86fc72-97a4-4be0-8a20-9b39c51b6c16\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/1_.png\" class=\"align-center\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span><span>1st place:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span><span><span><span> &#8220;Microlilies&#8221; by Sonja Bornd\u00f6rfer, Norbert W. Hopf, and Michael Lanzinguer, Germany. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Microorganisms growing on agar plates with lactose, cysteine, and electrolyte deficiency. The orange appearance was achieved using the bacterium <em>Rhodococcus rhodochrous<\/em> and the green pads by applying a solution of sterile water and <em>Micrococcus luteus<\/em> to the agar. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"second place\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"53e4a7f4-b8c2-4000-995a-63284adb4ea3\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/2_.png\" class=\"align-center\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span><span>2nd place: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span><span><span><span>&#8220;Guayac\u00e1n Feathers&#8221; by Marlene Luengas Bautista and Yanet Trovar, Mexico.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The colors of the plumage and the alteration of the color of its body depending on the light stand out. Green, bluish, emerald shades, and a dazzling yellow beak are observed. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span><span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"third place\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"a657aac2-d975-4a25-b7b2-82b7b4a68beb\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/3_.png\" class=\"align-center\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>3rd place:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span><span><span> &#8220;Flamenco Party&#8221; by Mireya Duran, Texas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>For the skirt, <em>Klebsiella pneumoniae<\/em> and <em>Enterococcus faecalis<\/em> were used, the skin was obtained through a mixture of <em>Candida albicans<\/em> and <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>. The rose of the hair is <em>Staphylococcus saprophyticus<\/em> and the hoop-shaped earrings were achieved thanks to <em>Micrococcus luteus<\/em>.
